The Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) has unveiled a fleet of Ford Ranger Hi-Rail vehicles fitted with advanced laser technology to strengthen the inspection and safety monitoring of the country’s Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).
The move highlights Tanzania’s commitment to modernising its transport sector and improving railway safety standards across the region.
The newly introduced Hi-Rail vehicles are specially modified Ford Rangers capable of operating both on ordinary roads and directly on railway tracks.

This dual functionality allows railway engineers and inspection teams to quickly access different parts of the SGR network for maintenance checks, technical inspections, and emergency response operations.
What makes the vehicles particularly significant is the installation of laser-based inspection systems. The technology is designed to scan and assess the condition of railway tracks with a high level of accuracy. It can detect defects such as cracks, misaligned rails, worn-out sections, and other structural weaknesses that may not be easily identified through manual inspections.
According to TRC officials, the use of laser technology will improve preventive maintenance by enabling engineers to identify and address problems before they become major safety risks. This is expected to reduce train delays, minimize maintenance costs, and enhance the overall reliability of railway services.
The technology will also improve efficiency within the railway sector. Traditional inspections often require large teams and lengthy track closures, but the laser-equipped vehicles can collect real-time data while moving along the railway line. This means inspections can be completed faster with minimal disruption to passenger and cargo transport services.
Tanzania’s SGR project remains one of East Africa’s largest infrastructure investments and plays a key role in connecting major economic centres within the country and neighbouring regions. The introduction of these advanced inspection vehicles reflects the government’s broader vision of adopting modern transport solutions that meet international railway safety standards.
As the SGR network continues to expand, the use of smart inspection systems is expected to improve public confidence in railway transport while supporting economic growth, regional trade, and safer travel across Tanzania.
