Tragic crocodile attack claims two lives in Mavindini, Makueni County

Residents of Mavindini Ward in Makueni County are searching for two people believed to have perished following a crocodile attack in the Athi River.

A distress call was received from a community member reporting the tragic incident, which occurred late in the evening at Nzeveni Kwa Letu in Yekanga Sub-location, Mavindini Ward.

According to the Red Cross Society in Makueni County, the response team had already been activated and resumed search and retrieval operations Wednesday May 20, 2026 in the morning.

Reports indicate that a 35-year-old woman was attacked by a crocodile while fetching water from the river.

A 20-year-old man who attempted to rescue her was also attacked. Sadly, both victims are feared dead.

This marks the first crocodile attack incident reported this year along the Athi River. Last year, more than three people reportedly lost their lives in similar attacks from the same river.

The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) is currently assisting in search efforts and working closely with local authorities and residents to help prevent further attacks.
