US Embassy issues security alert to citizens in Nairobi estates

The United States Embassy in Kenya has issued a security alerts to its citizens who live within Nairobi County.

The alert, issued on Friday, March 15, is warning American citizens over reports of increased criminal activity in residential areas of Nairobi.

“Incidents include crimes of opportunity such as purse and phone snatching.  The government of Kenya is taking measures to place more police in high crime areas,” the alert read in part.

Subsequently, the embassy is advising its citizens to always be aware of their surroundings in public, or keep a low profile all together.

“Do not display signs of wealth, such as wearing expensive jewelry or watches, or flashing large sums of money; keep valuables, such as phones, concealed,” the alert warned.

And in case of a robbery attempt, the alert is warning American citizens against physically resisting any robbery attempt and remain calm, “Confrontation with these individuals often leads to violence.”

While in traffic, the citizen have been advised to keep car doors locked and windows up.
