The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Special General Meeting (SGM) scheduled for Saturday, November 7, 2026, was cancelled after violent scenes erupted at Three Steers Hotel in Meru, with rowdy youths reportedly storming the premises and police officers firing tear gas inside the venue.
Chaos broke out in the early hours of Saturday after a group of more than 100 unidentified youths allegedly took over the hotel grounds and surrounding areas, disrupting preparations for the meeting.
Delegates arriving for the assembly, particularly those allied to FKF Vice President McDonald Mariga, were reportedly pelted with stones and prevented from accessing the meeting hall.
Mariga arrived at the hotel under tight security provided by the Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU) as tensions escalated around the venue.
Police officers later intervened to disperse the crowds, deploying tear gas within the hotel premises. The operation forced delegates, hotel staff and other attendees to flee, effectively bringing the meeting to a halt before its deliberations could begin.
The disruption came at a critical time for Kenyan football, with the meeting expected to address contentious administrative and governance issues within the federation.
Convened under Article 31(2) of the FKF Constitution, the SGM was scheduled to review resolutions adopted by the National Executive Committee (NEC) on April 24, 2026, alongside the conduct of several NEC officials.
Those listed for review included Mariga, Women Representative Kerubo Momanyi and regional representatives Dan Shikanda (Nairobi), Gabriel Mghendi (Coast), Collins Opiyo Kalee (Nyanza), Robert Macharia (Central) and Bernard Lagat (Upper Rift Valley).
The meeting was also expected to attract international football officials, including FIFA’s Senior MA Governance Service Manager Bruno Comicholi, FIFA Regional Lead David Ndayisenga and CAF Legal Manager Nnaemeka A. Olu. Kenya’s Acting Sports Registrar, Chacha J. Maroa, was also expected to attend as an observer.
However, the violence and subsequent police intervention prevented the federation from proceeding with the planned agenda, leaving the governance matters unresolved.
