Wetang’ula Responds After Raila Attack on US Ambassador Meg Whitman

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula on Friday, August 18 urged politicians to respect foreign diplomats in the country for the enhancement of international ties.

Speaking in Webuye, Bungoma County during a funds drive, Wetang’ula noted that diplomats play a key role in fostering Kenya’s growth and stability.

In reference to Azimio leader Raila Odinga’s attack on US Envoy Meg Whitman, the Speaker explained the need for all Kenyans including politicians to support and work closely with foreign diplomats.

“Kenya is a country that upholds respect for diplomats of various States. Leaders should restrain themselves from attacking envoys for the good of the country,” Wetang’ula said.

He added, “Kenya has benefited a lot from the outstanding bilateral relations with America and leaders should reciprocate the gesture by respecting its envoys.”

The National Assembly Speaker also warned politicians against using abusive language on diplomats, which he said may undermine the nation’s image as well as drive away potential investors.

“Kenya should not allow politicians to employ regressive politics that drive away potential investors,” Wetang’ula declared.

He called on opposition leaders in the country to exercise their democratic rights without interfering with bilateral relations between Kenya and other nations.

“As Kenyans, we must speak and handle our issues amicably. We should guard against any attempts to allow our political differences to soil the outstanding diplomatic relations with our foreign partners,” Wetang’ula explained.

Wetang’ula’s sentiments come barely two days after Raila Odinga lashed out at US Ambassador Ms. Meg Whitman, accusing her of interfering with local politics.

While referring to her as a rogue envoy, Raila asked the US Ambassador to shut her mouth or risk being recalled.

This was after Whitman, in her remarks during the Devolution Conference in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County termed the 2022 general elections as free fair, and democratic.
