Why Kamukunji Police Station is set to be headquarters of new Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit

Kamukunji is one of Nairobi’s clearest representations of the city’s role as Kenya’s commercial and financial centre but operating within a complex urban security environment.

This is why Kamukunji Police Station has been proposed as the headquarters of the new Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit.

The station will be transformed into a modern security complex incorporating operational offices and police housing.

The headquarters will also host the Integrated Command and Communication Centre (IC4) for real time coordination, communication and surveillance within Nairobi City County.

Secretary for Internal Security, Mr. Thomas Sakah, led a multi-agency technical team comprising representatives from the Kenya Defence Forces, Kenya Police Service, Administration Police Service, Nairobi City County Government and the State Department for Housing and Urban Development on a site assessment to determine its suitability.

Construction is scheduled to begin in August 2026.
