Seventeen (17) people have been confirmed dead following a grisly road accident that occurred at around 1:30 a.m. this morning in Salama, Kilome, Makueni County, along the Nairobi–Mombasa Highway.

Confirming the accident, Dr Stephen Mwangangi, Medical Superintendent at Sultan Hamud Sub-County Hospital, said all 14 occupants of the 14-seater matatu died on the spot. Three other people from a trailer involved in the collision also died.

Dr Mwangangi said six survivors were treated and discharged, while one driver who sustained serious injuries was transferred to Makueni County Referral Hospital for specialised care.

According to police, the accident occurred after two trailer lorries travelling in the same direction collided from behind, triggering the subsequent collision involving the matatu, which was headed towards Nairobi.
