Bullfighting tradition to find new life in Kakamega’s Premier League

Kakamega County is set to launch a Bullfighting Premier League in 2026, in a bold move to promote cultural heritage and grow sports tourism in the region.

Governor Fernandes Barasa made the announcement on Monday during the Second Edition of the Governor’s Bullfighting Extravaganza held at Solyo Grounds in Shinyalu Constituency. The premier league will feature top bulls from all 12 sub-counties, with the ultimate champion set to take home a cash prize of Sh200,000.

Governor Barasa said the league will run on a structured calendar, with tournaments hosted across the county and culminating in a grand championship. He noted that bullfighting, a longstanding tradition among the Luhya community, particularly in Kakamega, holds deep cultural significance and continues to unite people across generations.

“For decades, bullfighting has been part of our identity as the Luhya people. It brings families and communities together and symbolizes strength, honor, and celebration,” said Barasa.

He added that institutionalizing the sport through a formal league will not only help preserve this rich heritage but also stimulate economic growth.

“Bullfighting has the potential to be a major driver of the local economy by attracting visitors and supporting businesses in hospitality, transport, and entertainment,” the governor said.

The county government will collaborate with bull owners, cultural leaders, and stakeholders to ensure the league is professionally managed, safe, and widely promoted.

Governor Barasa emphasized that the Bullfighting Premier League will help position Kakamega as a cultural tourism destination, showcasing local talent and traditions to a national and global audience.

“We are committed to building a legacy that celebrates our culture while creating meaningful economic opportunities for our people,” he said.

The governor’s move has been welcomed by residents and bullfighting enthusiasts as a step toward formalizing and elevating a beloved cultural sport.
