For many parents, keeping track of a child’s progress at university can mean waiting for examination results, making phone calls or travelling to campus. Egerton University is now seeking to change that with a new digital platform that brings students’ academic information closer to home.
The university has launched a Parents Portal, allowing parents, guardians and sponsors to monitor their students’ academic progress without waiting for report days or making physical visits to campus.
In a statement issued on August 19, Egerton said the platform provides families with a new way to stay connected to students, moving beyond traditional communication methods such as phone calls and face-to-face meetings.
“The Parents Portal is an exciting opportunity for parents/guardians/sponsors to become more involved in their student(s)’ academic progress,” the university said.
Once registered, parents can access a student’s profile, including their registration number, academic programme and other general information held by the university.
The portal also provides access to fee information, enabling families to view the amount owed for each semester or term and plan their finances accordingly.
Academic performance is another key feature. Parents can view examination results through the dashboard, although the university notes that the grades displayed are provisional and subject to official confirmation.
For parents whose children live on campus, the platform also provides accommodation details, including the hostel block, room and bed assigned to the student for the semester.
The move comes amid concerns about parents sometimes discovering too late that their children are struggling academically or have stopped attending classes. There have also been reports of students presenting parents with forged fee statements or fabricated academic information to obtain money.
By providing parents with direct access to verified information, Egerton hopes to strengthen communication between students, families and the university while encouraging greater accountability.
The portal can be accessed online using a laptop, tablet or smartphone, allowing parents to monitor their children’s progress from virtually anywhere.
To register, parents need a valid email address and a national ID or passport number. More than one parent or guardian can register separately for the same student.
The platform is available through parents.egerton.ac.ke.
