Four people killed in a fatal road accident along Eldoret-Nakuru highway

Four people lost their lives on December 18, 2023 at around 0500hrs, through a tragic road accident involving a Nakuru-bound matatu belonging to Msamaria Shuttle Ltd Police have confirmed.

This is after the said motor vehicle lost control, colliding head on with an oncoming 60-seater bus at Hill Tea Area along Eldoret- Nakuru Road.

The matatu was carrying 16 passengers at the time of the accident which claimed the lives of the driver and three other passengers that died on the spot.

Nine other passengers were seriously injured,and are currently receiving treatment at Eldama Ravine Sub-County Referral Hospital. The bodies of the deceased were moved to the same facility.

The National Police Service urges motorists and all other road users to exercise extreme caution while on the roads especially during this rainy season.

This comes only two days after another accident happened in Makueni.

The death toll from the Saturday, December 16 evening accident that saw a matatu lose control before plunging into a ditch in Kikima, Makueni County has reaches 12.

Two more people succumbed to their injuries while receiving treatment on Sunday, December 17.

Six people are still receiving treatment at Makueni County Referral Hospital in Wote town.

The 14-seater matatu was travelling from Kikima Township to Machakos Town when its breaks failed at around 6pm.

Ten people died on the spot while seven were rushed to Mbooni Hospital before being referred to Makueni County Referral Hospital.

Claims that the Finance Bill 2026 introduces a new tax on mitumba clothing have sparked heated debate, prompting Kenya Kwanza leaders to come out and explain what the proposed law actually says.  At the centre of the debate is Clause 31(a)(ix)(169), which deals with the Value Added Tax (VAT) treatment of worn clothing, commonly known as mitumba, sold within the country.   According to the clause, the Finance Bill proposes to simplify the VAT treatment of the mitumba sector by ensuring that VAT is charged only at the point of importation, while domestic sales of the same goods are exempt from further VAT.  In effect, VAT will be paid once when second-hand clothes enter Kenya. After that, traders selling the clothes in local markets will not be required to charge VAT on their sales.  The proposal is intended to reduce the compliance burden on traders by ensuring that VAT is collected at a clear and verifiable point. It also removes the possibility of double taxation, making business easier for traders while reducing paperwork and helping them retain more of their earnings.  Read Also Finance Bill heads to Ruto’s desk…
