Funerals under siege, County Commissioner warns Kisumu’s mischief makers

Kisumu County has become the unlikely stage for a bizarre crime wave, where even funerals are no longer safe from mischief.

County Commissioner Ramadhan Mohammed Mwabudzo has now stepped in with a stern and slightly humorous warning to the gangs who have turned mourning ceremonies into chaotic playgrounds.

Speaking in Kisumu, Mwabudzo expressed outrage at criminals who storm funerals, scatter food meant for mourners, and loot property. His remarks followed a shocking incident in Nyakach, last Month in Kamgan Village, where thieves raided a funeral and made off with livestock, leaving mourners bewildered.

“We cannot allow funerals to become comedy shows for criminals. These acts are shameful, and anyone caught will face the full force of the law,” Mwabudzo declared, his tone mixing anger with disbelief.

The Commissioner also took aim at politicians, accusing some of fueling the problem by sponsoring gangs for political gain. He warned that such reckless behavior only deepens insecurity and undermines community trust.

“Leaders must not sponsor goons. Funding hooligans for popularity is not politics, it is chaos,” Mwabudzo added, drawing laughter from some residents who found his bluntness refreshing.

Beyond the stern words, Mwabudzo urged Kisumu residents to work hand in hand with security agencies. He emphasized that community vigilance is the strongest weapon against rising crime, promising increased patrols and intelligence operations to restore calm.

The situation has left many locals both worried and amused. Imagine going to mourn and ending up chasing your stolen goat, insecurity is eroding cultural traditions and turning solemn gatherings into scenes of fear.

Security analysts argue that tackling unemployment and curbing political manipulation will be key to solving the crisis. Mwabudzo’s colorful warnings may have drawn chuckles, but they also underline a sobering reality – Kisumu cannot afford to let criminals rewrite the script of community life.

For now, the Commissioner’s message is clear: funerals should remain places of dignity, not crime scenes or comedy sketches. And if gangs insist on turning grief into chaos, they may soon find themselves starring in a different kind of drama, inside a courtroom.
