Gen Francis Ogolla was set to celebrate his father’s birthday this Saturday

It is now emerging that late Chief of Defence Forces General Francis Ogolla was to celebrate his father’s birthday on Saturday, April 20.

General Ogolla’s father was crossing 100 years.

Speaking to the media, his father- Joel Oketch- said there were plans to attend a church service and later a birthday party at their family home in Alego Usonga, Siaya County.

The military chief’s sister Peris Oketch said burial plans were being organized by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) in line with military protocols.

However, his family is much involved in the entire process.

General Ogolla will be laid to rest at his home on Sunday, April 21. He built a home about two kilometers from his father’s compound where he will be buried.

“This will be preceded by a heartfelt service at his local church in Nduru,” read part of the family statement.

His father said he was aware that the soldier wanted to buried within 72 hours after his demise and wrote it down in his will.

A memorial service will follow on Friday, April 26 at Ulinzi Sports Complex in Lang’ata, the family added.

“Additionally, a memorial service will be held on Friday, April 26th 2024 at the Ulinzi Sports Complex in Lang’ata, where he found solace in his bi-weekly runs.

“Let us gather to celebrate the life of a General who dedicated his life to service, love, generosity, and devotion that touched us deeply. We appreciate your prayers and support during this difficult time,” read the statement.

Kenya began the three-day official mourning period in honour of General Francis Ogolla today. All flags in Kenya and Kenya’s missions across the world will be raised at half mast.

All government activities have also been put on hold during this mourning period.

Meanwhile, two officers who perished in the KDF chopper crash in Elgeyo Marakwet will be laid to rest today (Friday).

The funeral service of Brigadier Swale Saidi is currently underway in Shanzu, Mombasa County.

He will then be interred in accordance with Islam traditions in Kikambala, Kilifi County.

Captain Sora Mohammed will be interred in Moyale, Marsabit County.
