Junior Stars seek redemption against Somalia in a do-or-die U-17 AFCON qualifiers match

Kenya’s Under-17 national football team, Junior Stars, will be looking to bounce back when they face Somalia U17 in the CAF U17 Africa Cup of Nations CECAFA regional qualifiers at Kigali Pele Stadium in Rwanda on Wednesday, October 14 afternoon.

The Group C encounter is scheduled to kick off at 2:00 p.m. East African Time, with Kenya seeking a positive result after suffering a 2-0 defeat against Tanzania in their opening match of the qualifiers on October 10.

Goals from Didmas Shida Athanas and Geoffrey Nkuba condemned Junior Stars to defeat, leaving the Kenyan youngsters under pressure to improve their performance and keep their qualification ambitions alive.

Kenya will, therefore, need to show greater attacking efficiency, defensive discipline and composure in possession as they prepare to face a Somalia side equally determined to secure a favourable result.

Somalia, meanwhile, enter the contest following a 1-1 draw against Tanzania in their previous encounter on October 12. The result demonstrated their ability to compete against the defending regional champions, setting the stage for an intriguing battle against Kenya.

The two sides also have a recent history in the competition. In the previous edition of the CECAFA U17 qualifiers in November 2025, Kenya and Somalia played out a 1-1 draw, highlighting how closely matched the teams can be.

That result adds another layer of importance to Wednesday’s encounter, with both sides aware that small details could determine the outcome.

For Junior Stars, the challenge will be to turn possession into meaningful scoring opportunities while avoiding the defensive lapses that proved costly against Tanzania. Their midfielders will need to control the tempo, support the attack and prevent Somalia from exploiting spaces during transitions.

Somalia will be keen to build on their draw against Tanzania and take advantage of any uncertainty in the Kenyan defence. Their ability to remain organised and capitalise on scoring chances could play a significant role in deciding the contest.

The coaching staff will also be looking for improved concentration and teamwork from the Kenyan players as they seek to respond positively to their opening defeat.

With the top team in each group advancing to the semi-finals alongside the best second-placed team across the three groups, every point remains important in the race for qualification.
