Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has come forward to strongly criticize the government following the lobbing of tear gas at students of Butere Girls’ High School.
Kalonzo mentioned that it is a huge ‘National shame’ for something of that nature to happen while congratulating the students for their courage.
He posted on his X(formerly Twitter), “What a national shame! How does this regime justify lobbing teargas at young girls from Butere Girls who declined to stage their play “Echoes of War” at the National Drama Festival? Their bravery serves as a national wake-up call. When voices of truth are silenced and art is censored, democracy suffers. I stand with Butere Girls and all students who joined the walkout in solidarity. Kenya must remain a country where even the echoes of war are heard — and heeded.”
Further, Kalonzo questioned the silence from three major stakeholders on the critical issue.
“The silence from State House, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Interior is absolutely telling,”he says
Also, Kalonzo has termed Malala’s arrest as outright violation of the Constitution that gives every Kenyan freedom of expression
It should be noted that the play Echoes of war created a buzz online and on the streets after it was banned even though the High Court in Nyamira gave a decision that allowed it to be played in national concerts.
Currently, Malala, who was arrested on Wednesday night, has been released as the students of Butere made history after entering the hall only to sing the national anthem and leave without performing as scheduled.
