Police recover suspected stolen cows after dramatic chase along Kisumu–Busia Road

Police officers in Siaya County recovered two cows suspected to have been stolen after pursuing a vehicle whose occupants attempted to evade arrest during an early morning patrol on Thursday.

According to the National Police Service (NPS), officers from Sidindi Police Station were conducting routine patrols in the Mabeya area at around 4:30 a.m. when they spotted a maroon saloon car behaving suspiciously along the Kisumu–Busia Road.

The officers signaled the driver to stop, but the vehicle sped off instead, prompting a pursuit towards the Mumias direction. After a brief chase, police managed to intercept the vehicle in the Sidindi–Sigalame area.

However, the suspects escaped before they could be arrested.

“Upon being cornered, the driver and his passenger abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot,” the NPS said in a statement posted on its X account on June 25, 2026.

A search conducted on the abandoned vehicle led to a surprising discovery. Officers found two cows that had been tightly restrained and loaded inside the saloon car. Police also recovered a plastic toy gun from the vehicle.

The recovered livestock has since been placed under police custody as authorities work to identify the rightful owners and establish the circumstances under which the animals were taken.

“The recovered animals are currently in police custody pending identification and collection by their rightful owners,” the statement read.

Police said investigations have been launched to track down the suspects who escaped and determine whether they are linked to other livestock theft incidents in the region.

The NPS praised the officers involved in the operation, saying the recovery highlighted the importance of routine patrols in deterring crime and protecting property.

“This recovery underscores the vigilance and effectiveness of police patrol operations in preventing crime and safeguarding property,” the service stated.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to combating livestock theft and ensuring those responsible are brought to justice.
