The 2026 FIFA World Cup continues on Sunday, June 14, with four matches across Groups E and F as former champions, tournament debutants and ambitious dark horses begin their campaigns.
The day’s action starts at 8:00 PM EAT, with four-time world champions Germany taking on tournament newcomers Curaçao at Houston Stadium in Texas, before Group F heavyweights Netherlands and Japan clash later in Dallas.
Two more matches will follow into the early hours of Monday morning East African Time, with Ivory Coast facing Ecuador in Philadelphia and Sweden taking on Tunisia in Monterrey, Mexico.
Germany enter the tournament looking to put behind them disappointing back-to-back group-stage exits at the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.
The Europeans, who lifted their fourth World Cup title in 2014, are favourites heading into their Group E opener against Curaçao, the smallest nation ever to qualify for a FIFA World Cup.
Much of the spotlight will be on German midfielder Florian Wirtz, who arrives at the tournament as one of Europe’s most highly rated young talents. Germany will also rely on a blend of experienced internationals and emerging stars as they seek a return to the latter stages of the competition.
For Curaçao, simply reaching the World Cup marks a historic achievement. The Caribbean nation is among the debutants at the expanded 48-team tournament and will be hoping to make a statement against one of football’s traditional powerhouses.
Veteran Dutch tactician Dick Advocaat coaches the side and features experienced brothers Leandro and Juninho Bacuna at the heart of midfield.
Later in the evening from 11:00 PM EAT, the Netherlands face Japan in what is expected to be one of the most competitive opening matches of the group stage.
The Dutch arrive with high expectations under the leadership of captain Virgil van Dijk, whose experience and defensive leadership remain crucial to the Oranje’s ambitions.
However, Japan have built a reputation for upsetting football’s elite on the biggest stage. At the 2022 World Cup, the Samurai Blue stunned both Germany and Spain on their way to topping their group and will be aiming for another strong start in 2026.
Group E’s second fixture sees Ecuador take on Ivory Coast at Philadelphia Stadium, Pennsylvania, from 2:00 AM EAT on June 15.
Ecuador arrive in North America after an impressive qualifying campaign and are viewed by many as potential dark horses. The South Americans will look to build on their defensive solidity while drawing inspiration from midfielder Moisés Caicedo, who has emerged as one of the continent’s standout players.
Ivory Coast, meanwhile, come into the tournament with confidence after qualifying without conceding a goal. Led by captain Franck Kessié and boasting attacking threats such as Nicolas Pépé, the Elephants will be eager to begin with a positive result.
The final match of the day will be played on June 15, 5:00 AM, and will see Sweden face Tunisia in Monterrey. Sweden qualified under unusual circumstances after a difficult qualifying campaign and will be keen to prove they belong on football’s biggest stage.
Much of their hopes rest on striker Alexander Isak, who is expected to lead the Scandinavian side’s attack.
Tunisia, meanwhile, will be targeting a strong opening performance as they seek to advance beyond the group stage in a tournament featuring some of the world’s strongest nations.
