650 teams, over 13,000 players set for 4th Edition of Governor Wavinya Cup

The 4th Edition of the Governor Wavinya Cup will bring together 650 teams and more than 13,000 players drawn from all 40 wards across Machakos County.

This year’s edition goes beyond football. The tournament will feature transformative community outreach initiatives including mental health awareness and resilience, voluntary HIV counselling and testing, as well as career mentorship and skills training to empower Machakos youth both on and off the field.

Speaking during the official launch, Governor Wavinya Ndeti said her administration is building Machakos into the premier sports incubator in East Africa.

“We are transforming Machakos into a world-class sports tourism hub where talent is discovered, nurtured, polished, and exported to the world’s biggest arenas,” she said.

The Governor Wavinya Cup, launched in 2022, has become a permanent fixture in the county calendar. The tournament targets youth, women, and vulnerable groups to create career pathways and shield youth from drug abuse and other social vices. a6cd

Like previous editions, ward-level winners will receive Ksh 20,000 and sub-county champions Ksh 100,000, while county champions will pocket Ksh 1 million.
