President William Ruto’s allies from Ukambani Region have criticised plans by leaders of the United Opposition to rebrand their political outfit, questioning whether a change of name will offer Kenyans an alternative to the government.
UDA National Organising Secretary and Mwala MP Vincent Musyoka Kawaya says the opposition should focus on presenting policies and solutions to Kenyans instead of changing its political identity.
Speaking during a Mama Mboga empowerment drive in Kithimani, Yatta Constituency, Kawaya said United Opposition leaders remain the same politicians regardless of how many times they rebrand their coalition.
“They remain the same people, no matter how many times they rebrand. You can change the name, the colours or the structure, but you cannot change who you are. It is still the same monkey; only the forest has changed,” said Kawaya.
Kawaya challenged the opposition, which has consistently criticised President Ruto’s administration, to explain what it would do differently if given the opportunity to lead the country.
He questioned the opposition’s alternative policies, how they would be implemented and how much they would cost, arguing that Kenyans need solutions rather than political bickering.
“If you have been firmly criticising President Ruto, we want to know: what is it that you are offering Kenyans as an alternative to what the President is doing? How will you do it, and how much will it cost? That way, instead of bickering for the sake of it, let us debate policies and solutions,” Kawaya said.
A section of Machakos MCAs who accompanied Kawaya also took aim at Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, accusing him of hypocrisy and failing the region.
Kalama MCA Boniface Maeke accused Kalonzo of betraying the Kamba community in 1997 when he failed to back then regional presidential candidate Charity Ngilu.
Kangundo West MCA Charles Mbuva, meanwhile, criticised Kalonzo for branding Kenya Kwanza supporters as betrayers, accusing the Wiper leader of hypocrisy.
The remarks come as United Opposition leaders under the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition umbrella move to establish a more inclusive coalition, a move expected to reshape political alliances ahead of the 2027 General Election.
