Kennedy Kalombotole has been formally charged with the murder of a patient at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) after a panel of three psychiatrists from Mathare National Teaching and Referral Hospital found him fit to stand trial.
Justice Diana Kavedza had earlier directed that Kalombotole undergo a fresh psychiatric evaluation by a panel of three psychiatrists after a previous medical report from the accused’s doctor indicated that he was unfit to stand trial.
Appearing before the court, Justice Kavedza read the murder charge to the accused, stating:
“Kennedy Kalombotole, you are charged that on the 6th and 7th of February 2025, at Kenyatta National Hospital, Level 7B Ward, in Kilimani Sub-County, you murdered Gilbert Kinyua Muthoni.”
He pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The psychiatric assessment, prepared by Dr Chumba Joseph, Dr Adam Rubla and Dr Tahir of Mathare Hospital, concluded that Kalombotole is fit to plead and stand trial. However, the doctors noted that while in custody he has experienced episodes associated with sleepwalking and recommended that he undergo further assessment by a neurologist. They also advised that his adherence to prescribed medication be closely monitored.
Following the report, Justice Kavedza directed prison authorities to ensure that Kalombotole is provided with a diabetic diet and that he strictly adheres to his prescribed medication while in custody.
The court scheduled the hearing for 26th, 28th and 29th October,and 24th November.
