Kenya Police launches Strategic Communications Office to strengthen public engagement

The Kenya Police Service has launched a new communication framework aimed at improving public engagement and giving Kenyans greater access to information about the Service’s operations.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat on Tuesday commissioned the Strategic Communications Office at Kenya Police Headquarters, Vigilance House, marking a new approach to how the Service communicates with the public.

Lagat said the police should take the lead in explaining their work rather than leaving others to shape public perceptions about the Service.

“We must tell our story, every message we put must reflect the values of professionalism and values of the Kenya Police Service,” Lagat said.

He noted that the new office would provide a structured platform for officers to share their experiences, achievements and challenges while helping the public understand the work carried out by the police.

Lagat further cautioned that failing to communicate effectively could allow external voices to control the narrative surrounding the Service.

“If we do not tell our stories, someone else will,” he said.

The launch was accompanied by the unveiling of the Kenya Police Review, a new magazine highlighting the experiences and activities of officers serving in Haiti under the Multinational Security Support Mission.

The publication seeks to showcase the work of Kenyan officers participating in the international security mission while giving the public insight into their experiences outside the country.

The Kenya Police Service also relaunched its official website as part of the initiative. The revamped platform is expected to make it easier for members of the public to access official announcements, updates and other information from the Service.

The three initiatives form part of ongoing efforts to modernise the Kenya Police Service and strengthen its relationship with the public.

Through the Strategic Communications Office, magazine and revamped website, the Service seeks to improve the flow of information, promote greater transparency and ensure Kenyans receive timely and accurate updates directly from the police.
