Kenya’s Electric Mobility Sub-Sector elects new leadership to drive local manufacturing

The Electric Mobility Sub-Sector within the Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) has elected Hans van Toor of Roam as Chair and Matt Lloyd of AVA as Vice-Chair.

This leadership change aligns with Kenya’s strategic goal of building a sustainable and future-proof electric mobility industry, highlighting the importance of local manufacturing and underscoring a commitment to creating local value and clean industry jobs.

Focusing on building a sustainable electric mobility sector, the initiative aims to drive both industrial growth and environmental sustainability, with the manufacturing sector playing a pivotal role due to its significant job creation potential.

Under the new leadership of van Toor and Lloyd, KAM‘s Electric Mobility Sub-Sector will prioritize local manufacturing and develop a robust supply chain for electric vehicles and related technologies. This approach supports Kenya’s broader goal of increasing the manufacturing sector’s contribution to GDP, addressing current challenges within the sector.

The leadership team will concentrate on strengthening local manufacturing to reduce Kenya’s reliance on imports and position the country as a regional leader in electric mobility.

By fostering a sustainable, localized industry, the sub-sector aims to create opportunities for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) and expand sustainable industry jobs.

“It is an exciting, pivotal time for electric mobility in Kenya. Today, Kenya is leading the sector in Africa. With the right policies, investments, and collaboration across the sector, Kenya can keep leading the charge in EV manufacturing,” said Hans van Toor, Chair of KAM’s Electric Mobility Sub-Sector.

The Sub-Sector will work towards establishing a legal framework and providing guidance on processes to support local industries.

This includes creating open participation platforms to ensure representation for all stakeholders in Kenya’s electric mobility manufacturing sector, emphasizing inclusivity in driving the roadmap forward.

Kenya’s strategy aims to enhance global competitiveness, reduce transport emissions, and ensure that the electric mobility sector delivers sustainable economic benefits.

The new leadership team is committed to aligning the sector’s growth with Kenya’s long-term economic and environmental objectives, positioning the country to lead the region’s electric mobility transition.
