Khalwale’s son recounts final moments before Gloria’s death as hundreds gather for burial in Kakamega

Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale’s son has shared an emotional account of the final moments before his father’s third wife, Gloria Sekeiyan Khalwale, who died on August 15.

Mourners gathered at Malinya Sports Ground in ikolomani Constituency, Kakamega County, to pay their last respects.

Stephen “Kapten” Khalwale, the last-born son of Senator Khalwale and his second wife Josephine Khalwale, recalled how what began as an ordinary Saturday morning turned into one of the most devastating days the family had experienced.

He said he had woken up at around 6 am and was preparing to attend a bullfighting event when his sister Gift came to his room in distress.

He initially assumed she was alerting him about cattle rustlers, an incident that had previously troubled the family, but Gift told him Gloria was having difficulty breathing and needed help urgently.

“I rushed to the house and found our father trying to resuscitate her. I quickly started the car, called my brother Engine, and we went to the hospital,” Stephen said.

He recalled that Gloria appeared to still be responsive during the drive, particularly as they passed near Sigalagala, giving the family a sense of hope that she would pull through.

Doctors continued efforts to save her after she arrived at the hospital, but the family received the news of her death shortly after.

Stephen described the moment as deeply sombre and said the sudden loss had left the family devastated.

Looking back, he recalled first meeting Gloria in 2006 and cherished the memories they had shared, thanking relatives, friends, and well-wishers who had rallied around the family since her passing.

The funeral service, conducted by the Catholic Church, drew political leaders from across the country, including Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, Homa Bay Senator Tom Kajwang, Bumula MP Jack Wamboka, and Kabuchai MP Majimbo Kalasinga, among others.

Gloria Sekeiyan Khalwale, mother of eight children, was laid to rest on Friday, August 21, 2026.
