Missing activist Boniface Mulinge Muteti has been found alive after disappearing for four days, discovered in the early hours of Friday morning, 25th September, 2026, after allegedly being dumped in the Lukenya area of Machakos County.
Vocal Africa CEO and human rights activist Hussein Khalid confirmed the news, revealing that Muteti was found around 3.00 am and had to walk a long distance to a Shell petrol station before a Good Samaritan helped him use a phone to call his brother.
“Comrade Muteti Mulinge has been found. He was dumped last night around 3:00am in the Lukenya area. He had to walk a long distance to a Shell petrol station where he got a good Samaritan who helped him with a phone to call his brother,” Khalid said.
Hussein described Muteti’s condition as worrying, stating that Muteti is currently receiving treatment.
“He is disoriented, weak and injured. He is currently receiving treatment at Sanel Hospital in Mlolongo area. Family, friends and comrades are proceeding there,” he added.
Muteti had been missing since Monday, September 21, when he reportedly left fellow activists in Nairobi’s Central Business District to print a petition they intended to present to police and other government offices.
His phone became unreachable shortly after, and he was not heard from again until his discovery on Friday morning.
His disappearance triggered urgent action from family members and human rights defenders, who reported the matter to police and on Thursday filed a petition at the Milimani Law Courts seeking orders compelling Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and DCI Director Mohammed Amin to account for his whereabouts.
The petition sought disclosure of his location and any records relating to his alleged arrest, custody, transfer, or release. Police had not publicly confirmed that Muteti was in their custody at any point.
The disappearance occurred against the backdrop of demonstrations by activists calling for the release of Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye, who remains detained in Uganda.
