Police in Nyahururu, Nyandarua County, have arrested three suspects and recovered assorted goods worth an estimated KSh100,000 believed to have been stolen from local traders.

The arrests followed a night patrol by officers from Nyahururu Police Station at Karuga Shopping Centre in Laikipia West at around 3 am on Thursday, September 24.

Nyahururu Sub-County Police Commander Joseph Matiku said officers on patrol encountered a motorcycle rider carrying a sack. Upon noticing the officers, the rider allegedly abandoned the motorcycle and fled.

“The motorcycle rider was ferrying a sack, and when he saw the officers, he abandoned his motorbike and ran away,” Matiku told TV47 Digital.

Police inspected the sack and found shoes and children’s clothes, which were taken to the police station.

Officers later arrested the motorcycle’s owner after he was lured to the station to collect it.

According to Matiku, the suspect was interrogated and led officers to his house, where more assorted goods were recovered. He also led police to two other suspects, resulting in their arrest.

The three are expected to be arraigned in court on Friday, as investigations into the theft continue.

Matiku said police had intensified patrols in Nyahururu and warned criminals that security officers would continue pursuing those involved in theft and other offences.

Among the traders who have identified some of the recovered goods is college student Patrick Wainaina.

Wainaina said his business stall was broken into on Tuesday, September 23 night and several items he had purchased from Gikomba Market in Nairobi were stolen.

He reported the incident at Nyahururu Police Station and was later informed that some of the recovered goods had been identified. Wainaina said the business was helping him raise money for his college fees.

He commended the police for recovering the items, saying the intervention had helped safeguard his source of income.

The latest arrests come amid increased police patrols in Nyahururu, which have also resulted in the recovery of stolen property, including livestock.
