Nandi County put on the spot over poor state of health facilities after senate probe

The County Government of Nandi has been urged to enhance the quality of healthcare services across its health facilities following an oversight visit by the Senate Health Committee.

The committee, led by its chairperson Jackson Mandago, who is also the Senator for Uasin Gishu County, conducted an inspection tour to assess the state of healthcare delivery, overall performance, and the challenges facing the sector in Nandi County.

During the visit, it emerged that several health facilities are operating under poor conditions, significantly undermining the provision of effective and timely medical services to residents.

Speaking during the exercise, Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei criticized county administrations for only making temporary improvements when oversight teams are expected.

He emphasized the need for consistent investment in healthcare systems, noting that service delivery standards should be maintained at all times rather than during inspection periods.

The committee identified a range of critical challenges affecting the sector, including persistent shortages of essential medicines, congestion in health facilities, poor sanitation standards, and gaps in child immunization programs.

These issues, the senators noted, continue to compromise patient care and expose residents to preventable health risks.

Other members of the delegation included Richard Onyonka (Kisii) and Vincent Chemitei (Baringo), who joined Jackson Mandago and Samson Cherargei in touring various health facilities across the county.

Their findings pointed to systemic gaps that require urgent intervention from the county government.

The Senate Health Committee concluded that while some efforts have been made to improve healthcare services, much more needs to be done to strengthen infrastructure, staffing, and supply chains.

They called on the Nandi County Government to prioritize healthcare reforms to ensure residents receive quality and reliable medical services.
