Roam launches Africa’s fastest-charging electric motorcycle with 100,000 km battery guarantee

Nairobi-based electric mobility company Roam has launched its latest electric motorcycle, the Roam Air Gen 3, featuring what the company says is Africa’s fastest-charging battery, capable of adding more than one kilometre of range per minute of charging.

The new Gen 3 battery can go from 20% to 80% charge in under 40 minutes, offering a full range of 80 km on a single charge.

For boda boda riders who depend on their motorcycles for daily income, the reduced charging downtime is a significant selling point.

Beyond speed, the battery comes loaded with features designed to address some of the biggest concerns among commercial riders. It has built-in GPS tracking that allows riders and fleet operators to locate and monitor the battery through the Roam app, a feature that directly tackles the problem of theft.

The battery is also IP67-rated, meaning it is fully waterproof and submersible, and comes in an industrial-grade aluminium casing that is drop-proof and built to handle tough road conditions.

The motorcycle itself features a reinforced chassis built with 98% robotic welding and has been tested through 200,000 vibration cycles under a 300 kg load.

Roam is also backing the battery with a 100,000 km guarantee, giving both riders and financing partners greater confidence in the investment.

Roam Country Manager Habib Lukaya said the motorcycle was built around the real problems riders face every day.

“We designed the Roam Air Gen 3 around the real challenges riders face: long charging times, affordability, theft, and tough road conditions. Every feature, from fast charging to tracking and durability, is focused on keeping riders on the road, reducing operating costs, and increasing daily earnings,” he said.

Roam, named Africa’s fastest-growing electric mobility company by the Financial Times in 2025, says the Gen 3 is purpose-built for the commercial motorcycle market across the continent, where millions of riders rely on boda bodas as their primary source of income.
