Russian missile strike kills seven – including 6-year-old girl – and injures 144

Seven people, including a 6-year-old girl, were on Saturday, August 19 killed while 144 others were seriously injured when a Russian missile struck a theatre in a Ukrainian city.

According to Ukrainian officials, the Russian missile hit a central square in the northern city of Chernihiv.

“I am sure our soldiers will give a response to Russia for this terrorist attack,” President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said in his nightly video address, delivered early on Sunday, August 20 at the end of a visit to Sweden, as reported by Reuters. “A notable response.”

Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko, in an Instagram address, says that of the 144 injured, 15 were children while 15 were police officers. “Most of the victims were in vehicles, crossing the road, or returning from church,” he adds.

The strike coincided with the Orthodox holiday of the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord.

The aftermath of the attack saw debris scattered across a square in front of the targetted theatre and surrounding buildings, with vehicles damaged too.
