Nearly 2,000 vulnerable secondary school students in Nairobi have received scholarship vouchers from the Nairobi City County Government, providing much-needed relief to families grappling with the rising cost of education.
A total of 1,957 Form Three and Form Four learners drawn from all 17 sub-counties were awarded scholarships during a mass distribution exercise held at Lady Northey Day Nursery. The beneficiaries, selected under the Nairobi City County Executive Scholarship Programme, will have their education supported, ensuring they remain in school despite financial hardship.
Parents hailed the initiative as a timely intervention that has eased the burden of school fees and safeguarded their children’s education.
“This scholarship has lifted a huge financial burden from our family,” said Jerusha Kagwigiria, whose child was among the beneficiaries. “It gives my child the opportunity to stay in school and focus on learning without interruption. I am grateful to the County Government for standing with families like ours.”
Another parent, Peter Chege, said the programme had restored hope to many households struggling to educate their children.
“Many parents are facing economic challenges, and this support gives us hope. By investing in education, the County is giving our children an opportunity to succeed and build a better future,” he said.
The Executive Scholarship Programme is part of Governor Sakaja Johnson’s broader education agenda aimed at expanding access to quality and inclusive education for learners from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Since taking office, the Sakaja administration has invested heavily in the education sector through the construction and rehabilitation of Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) centres, improvement of learning infrastructure, and expansion of programmes that support vulnerable learners.
The county has also significantly scaled up the Dishi Na County school feeding programme, which now provides subsidised nutritious meals to more than 300,000 public primary school learners at KSh5 per meal. The initiative has been credited with increasing school enrolment, improving attendance, reducing dropout rates, and enhancing academic performance across the city.
County officials said the Executive Scholarship Programme continues to eliminate financial barriers that prevent bright but needy students from completing their education, with thousands of learners benefiting each year.
