Samburu resident surrenders illegal AK-47 as disarmament drive continues

A resident of Samburu Central Sub-County has voluntarily surrendered an illegally held firearm as the government’s disarmament initiative continues to record progress in the region.

In a statement posted on its official X account on April 16, 2026, the National Police Service confirmed that the weapon was handed over to authorities at Maralal Police Station on April 15.

According to police, the firearm was surrendered by a resident from Loosuk Location who responded to the government’s directive encouraging members of the public to give up illegally held weapons during the ongoing amnesty period.

The police revealed that the resident handed over an AK-47 rifle together with one magazine and three rounds of ammunition.

“The firearm and ammunition are now secured in the station armoury, pending further action,” the National Police Service said in the statement.

Authorities noted that the latest surrender forms part of a wider disarmament exercise currently underway in Samburu County and surrounding areas that have historically experienced insecurity linked to illegal firearms.

Police further disclosed that the latest recovery brings the total number of weapons collected in the area to eight firearms, alongside 31 rounds of ammunition since the operation began.

“This latest surrender brings the total number of weapons recovered in the area during the ongoing exercise to eight (8), together with 31 rounds of ammunition,” the service stated.

The National Police Service praised individuals who have complied with the directive, noting that voluntary cooperation from residents is essential in restoring stability and safety within communities affected by armed conflict.

“The National Police Service commends those individuals who have heeded the call to disarm voluntarily. Such cooperation is vital to ensuring the security and safety of all residents in areas affected by insecurity,” the statement read.

Police have reiterated that the disarmament exercise remains active and urged members of the public still in possession of unlicensed firearms to surrender them to the nearest police station or administrative office.

“Members of the public who hold unlicensed firearms are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the current amnesty period and surrender them to the nearest administrative or police office, without fear of prosecution,” the service added.

Authorities say the initiative is aimed at reducing armed violence and strengthening security in the region.
