NEDP Party Leader Mike Sonko has stepped up his support for women’s football in Lang’ata after joining local leaders and party officials in celebrating the victory of Southlands Women FC.

Sonko, accompanied by Lang’ata MP aspirant Hon. Faiza Omar, NEDP Deputy Party Leader Antony Manyara, Hon. Francis Wambua, popularly known as Super PA, and other party officials, joined the team late at night to celebrate its well-deserved victory.

The celebrations brought together several aspirants, including Mugumoini MCA aspirant Hon. Vincent Muirigi, popularly known as General, Hon. Olise of Highrise Ward and Hon. Farida, a South C Ward aspirant.

The NEDP team also responded to the players’ immediate need for sporting equipment after learning that the team was facing a shortage of essential gear.

Sonko and his team donated two sets of football uniforms, 22 pairs of football boots and four new footballs, alongside allowances for the players.

The support is aimed at helping the young women compete effectively while creating an environment where talent can be identified, nurtured and developed.

Sonko said the support would not end with the latest donation, pledging continued backing for Southlands Women FC as it participates in future tournaments.

The former Nairobi governor has increasingly used sporting initiatives as a platform to engage and empower young people, particularly through support for grassroots teams that often struggle with inadequate equipment and resources.

For Southlands Women FC, the victory was therefore more than just a trophy. It became an opportunity to highlight the potential of women’s football and the need for greater investment in grassroots sporting talent.

With the new equipment and continued support promised, the team now looks set to take on future competitions with renewed confidence.

“Your victory is our victory,” Sonko said in celebrating the team, as Southlands Women FC basked in its triumph.
