Time has failed to heal our grief, says Raila family

A year after the passing of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, his family says his enduring presence in public life has made it impossible for their grief to heal.

Speaking on Wednesday, October 14 during a candle-lighting ceremony at Kang’o ka Jaramogi in Bondo, Siaya County, Raila’s sister, Akinyi Wenwa, revealed that the family is constantly reminded of their loss through daily media broadcasts, public tributes, and encounters with grieving citizens.

“When you wake up in the morning and switch on the radio, you will hear Raila’s name, and in most cases, his voice,” Wenwa told gatherers.

She noted that daily media broadcasts, public gatherings, and visits to Raila’s mausoleum continually confront the family with fellow mourners seeking solace.

“Our healing will not come from the family. It can only come from above and from knowing that we are not alone,” she said.

Meanwhile, Raila’s widow, Ida Odinga, urged the public to observe Thursday’s first anniversary commemoration peacefully and refrain from turning the event into a political rally.

Reflecting on Raila’s legacy, Ida noted that he was experienced differently by many as a father, brother, engineer, and friend and emphasized his lifelong commitment to peaceful democratic dialogue.

“Democracy demands that everybody should be given a hearing and you don’t have to disagree with those who do not agree with you in a violent manner,” Ida said.

The official anniversary commemoration will take place today, Thursday, October 15, at the Migwena Cultural Grounds in Bondo.

Family members, political leaders, and members of the public are expected to gather to honour the former Prime Minister, who passed away in India on October 15, 2025.
