Junior Stars crash out of CECAFA U17 Championship after second defeat

Kenya’s Under-17 national football team, the Junior Stars, have been eliminated from the CECAFA Under-17 Championship after suffering a second consecutive 2-0 defeat, this time against Somalia.

Kenya lost 2-0 to Somalia in their final Group C encounter, with Mohamud Osman and Abdullahi Hashi finding the net to seal victory for the Somali side.

The result condemned the Junior Stars to an early exit from the regional competition after they also suffered a similar 2-0 defeat against Tanzania in their opening group match.

The two defeats left Kenya without a point from their first two matches, ending their hopes of progressing to the next stage of the tournament.

The Junior Stars entered the competition hoping to make a strong impression and secure progress in the CECAFA regional qualifiers for the CAF Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations.

However, their campaign got off to a difficult start against Tanzania, who handed Kenya a 2-0 defeat in their opening fixture.
The Kenyan youngsters were subsequently under pressure to respond positively against Somalia, knowing that a strong performance and a favourable result were necessary to keep their hopes of advancing alive.

Instead, Somalia proved too strong, scoring twice to register another 2-0 victory and confirm Kenya’s elimination from the championship.

The back-to-back defeats meant Kenya conceded four goals without scoring in their two group matches, highlighting the challenges the team faced in attack and defence during the tournament.

Somalia capitalised on their opportunities through goals from Mohamud Osman and Abdullahi Hashi, ensuring that they finished the encounter with all three points.

For Kenya, the defeat marked a disappointing end to a campaign in which the team struggled to find the back of the net.

The elimination will provide an opportunity for the technical bench to assess the team’s performances, identify areas requiring improvement and prepare the young players for future international assignments.

Despite the early exit, the experience offers valuable lessons for the Junior Stars as they continue developing at youth international level.

Improving their attacking efficiency, defensive organisation and ability to respond under pressure will be important priorities as the team looks ahead to future competitions.

For now, Kenya’s CECAFA Under-17 Championship campaign ends without a win or a goal in their two group matches, while Tanzania and Somalia have each inflicted identical 2-0 defeats on the East African side.
