Police in Bungoma South Sub-County have dismantled a suspected mobile phone theft and hacking syndicate following the arrest of two key suspects in a joint operation with M-KOPA Kenya Limited.
According to a statement posted by the National Police Service (NPS) on its X account on June 6, 2026, the intelligence-led operation targeted a criminal network that had allegedly been operating across Bungoma Town and the Sang’alo area.
The two suspects, who had reportedly been under police surveillance since 2025, were arrested in Bungoma Town after investigators linked them to a series of complaints from members of the public who had fallen victim to the scheme.
During the operation, officers recovered dozens of mobile phones believed to have been stolen, alongside equipment allegedly used to manipulate and unlock devices.
Among the items seized were 38 M-KOPA HMD mobile phones, 53 assorted handsets of different brands, and five flashing tools suspected to have been used to hack and alter phone operating systems.
Police said the recovered devices and digital equipment have been secured as exhibits to aid ongoing investigations.
The suspects are currently being held in custody and are expected to be arraigned in court once processing is completed.
In its statement, the National Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to combating organized crime and protecting citizens from criminal networks.
“The National Police Service reassures the public of its unwavering commitment to dismantling criminal networks nationwide,” the statement read.
The service also appealed to members of the public to continue sharing information on criminal activities through the nearest police station, emergency lines 999 and 911, or the #FichuaKwaDCI toll-free number 0800 722 203 and WhatsApp number 0709 570 000.
Authorities say public cooperation remains critical in the fight against crime and in bringing perpetrators to justice.
