UDA’s MP Gikaria in trouble: IEBC fines him KSh2.5M over Ol Kalou remarks, orders apology and retraction

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has fined Nakuru Town East MP David Gikaria KSh2.5 million after finding him guilty of several electoral malpractises during the just-concluded Ol Kalou By-election campaigns.

Announcing its decision on Tuesday, July 14, the Commission’s Electoral Code of Conduct Enforcement Committee ordered MP Gikaria to pay the amount within 48 hours of the matter’s determination.

According to the electoral agency, the legislator made utterances amounting to improper voter inducement during the by-election campaigns, an aspect which undermines a free and fair elections.

Consequently, Gikaria was issued with a severe formal warning to seize and desist from making any further misleading statements regarding the statutory voting requirements which require a National Identification (ID) card.

IEBC could not fathom why the lawmaker would tell voters that their ID will not be required in order for them to cast their ballots in the Ol Kalou By-election. This statement, IEBC insists, had the potential to mislead voters about electoral procedures.

Consequently, the IEBC directed MP Gikaria to issue a public retraction and apology to the people of Ol Kalou and Kenya at large on Wednesday, July 15 2026, admitting that his statements were wrong and it shall not be repeated.

“The aunthenticated video, evidence presented before this committee, be referred to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution to investigate potential offences under the Elections Offences Act,” IEBC Commissioner Alutalala Mukhwana further directed. “If established, MP David Gikaria be prosecuted criminally under the law.”

Failure to comply with these orders, Commissioner Alutalala said, will attract further sanctions that will include, but not limited to, barring MP David Gikaria from participating in any further electoral activity conducted and supervised by IEBC
