Pokot elders in West Pokot County have expressed their dissatisfaction in how authorities are responding and dealing with those causing mayhem in the county.
Addressing the media in Kapenguria, the elders expressed a deep concern over the rising incidents of violence and crime that have threatened the safety and stability of the community.
They emphasized that the ongoing illegal activities not only endanger lives but also disrupt the socio-economic fabric of the area.
During a community gathering at Kamatira in Kapenguria, Wilson Lonapa Peace Foundation founder Wilson Lonapa who led other elders conveyed their discontent and made it clear that they would not tolerate such lawlessness in the area.
They warned that those found engaging in these illicit activities would face dire consequences, including the possibility of a curse—a traditional means of invoking communal justice and accountability.
The elders also decried over increased cases of motorbike theft within the county, claiming that more than 120 motorbikes have been stolen in the county for the last one year, arguing that if the government doesn’t move with speed to contain the situation, then no one should blame them for the next action they will take.
The illegal gold mining operations in the county have also raised alarms, not just for the environmental degradation, but for the violent confrontations that have arisen as various groups vie for control over the lucrative ventures.
According to the elders, these confrontations have escalated to the point of claiming lives, which they find unacceptable.
As the situation develops, Pokot elders remain resolute in their mission to protect their community from further harm, emphasizing that the collective strength and values of the Pokot people will prevail against those who seek to disrupt their way of life.
Community members are being urged to return to peaceful and productive means of livelihood, promoting cooperation and unity rather than conflict and criminality.
The elders’ call to action serves as a reminder of the importance of traditional governance and community cohesion in tackling modern challenges.
