A woman who was with Nairobi Hospital Board Director Dr. Job Obwaka at the time he collapsed has been placed in police custody as a person of interest, according to a police report.
Dr. Obwaka, a veteran gynaecologist, was pronounced dead on arrival at Nairobi Hospital, after being rushed from Kitengela, where he had collapsed while on personal errands. He was reportedly in the company of Beatrice Wangare, believed to be a business partner.
According to a report from Nairobi Hospital security, the incident occurred on 1 May 2026 at about 1900 hrs when the ambulance brought him to the facility. Medical personnel confirmed his death upon arrival.
Police officers who visited the hospital established that the deceased had a history of medical conditions, though the exact cause of death remains undetermined. The scene was documented and processed as officers of DCI Kilimani took over the probe.
The body was transferred to Lee Funeral Home mortuary under admission number 23269/2026, pending postmortem examination.
Beatrice Wangare, 45, has been detained as investigations continue.
The death of the veteran doctor has raised questions from several quarters. Dr. Obwoka was at the center of investigations Dr. Job Obwaka, due to an ongoing, intense leadership and governance dispute at the institution.
The 83-year-old was arrested on March 14, 2026, alongside other senior officials and they were charged with several offences related to the management of the hospital, which his colleagues and union representatives claimed were politically motivated and part of an attempt to seize control of the hospital’s management and assets.
