Motorists using the Iten–Kabarnet Road have been advised to seek alternative routes after a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall blocked a section of the road near Kolol, disrupting traffic flow in the area.
In a traffic advisory issued on Saturday, May 2, the Kenya National Highways Authority said the blockage was caused by ongoing heavy rains being experienced across the country, making the affected stretch impassable.
“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) wishes to notify motorists and the public that, due to ongoing heavy rainfall across the country, a landslide has occurred along the Iten–Kabarnet Road near Kolol, blocking the affected section,” the authority said in a statement.
KeNHA noted that restoration efforts are already underway to clear the debris and reopen the road to motorists as soon as possible.
“Restoration efforts are currently underway, and the Authority is working to reinstate normal traffic flow as soon as possible,” the statement added.
Motorists planning to travel along the route have been urged to use the Iten–Eldoret–Eldama Ravine–Kabarnet road as an alternative route until the affected section is cleared and declared safe for use.
KeNHA further called on road users to remain vigilant and cooperate with traffic officers and marshals stationed at the site to manage movement and enhance safety.
“Motorists are advised to exercise caution and strictly adhere to instructions issued by police officers and traffic marshals on site to ensure their safety,” the authority stated.
The highways agency said it is closely monitoring the situation and will continue providing updates as necessary, even as weather conditions remain unpredictable in several parts of the country due to the ongoing rains.
The closure is expected to inconvenience travelers and transport operators who rely on the Iten–Kabarnet route, but authorities insist the measures are necessary to safeguard lives as emergency works continue on the affected road section.
