Siaya County senate aspirant Denis Omondi has kicked off a three-day voter sensitization caravan aimed at increasing youth voter registration and participation ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Running as an independent candidate, Omondi said the initiative seeks to encourage new registrations, facilitate voter transfers for residents who have moved, and prompt already registered voters to verify their details with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Speaking at the launch, Omondi noted that residents aged 35 and below make up about 65% of Siaya’s population. He urged them to take an active role in choosing local leadership and to evaluate candidates based on development agendas rather than party affiliations.

“For the longest time, people have been telling young people that they are leaders of tomorrow. That is a lie. You are the leader right now,” Omondi said. He also cautioned youth against being hired to cause violence during campaigns.

Youth leaders supporting the caravan echoed the call for responsible participation. Immaculate Awuor Odhiambo urged young residents to obtain national identity cards and vote for leaders committed to youth development, regardless of party lines. Widen Ochieng appealed to Gen Z voters to resist financial inducements and vote thoughtfully, while Isva Onyango encouraged them to seek political change through the ballot box rather than street clashes.

Omondi further appealed to residents with uncollected national identity cards at government offices to pick them up promptly to ensure they can participate in the upcoming election cycle.
