Cape Media journalists earn national recognition as AMEA 2026 nominees are unveiled

Journalists from Cape Media have earned national recognition after several of the station’s reporters were named among nominees for the 2026 Annual Media Excellence Awards (AMEA), underscoring the broadcaster’s growing influence in investigative, education and sports journalism.

Among those nominated is TV47’s investigative reporter Samira Mohamed for her hard-hitting exposé Divine or Deceptive, an in-depth investigation into alleged miraculous HIV healings linked to self-proclaimed preacher David Owuor.

The report examined claims by followers who said they had been cured of HIV/AIDS through divine intervention, scrutinized medical records, and questioned the authenticity of the testimonies.

Promoting the investigation, TV47 described it as a special report that would “examine medical records, lift the veil on secretive practices, and ask the hard questions,” adding: “Is it divine intervention, or a dangerous deception?”

The story gained national attention following reports that the government had launched investigations into the alleged healings, including scrutiny of medical professionals said to have endorsed the claims.

Also recognized is TV47’s education reporter Andrine Kilemi for her feature The Elusive Equalizer, which explored disparities in the implementation of the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) across Kenya.

Her report highlighted how learners in banditry-prone areas such as West Pokot County and Baringo County face enormous challenges, from poor infrastructure and teacher shortages to dangerous journeys to school, while urban schools enjoy better resources and structured learning environments.

Meanwhile, Radio 47’s sports reporter Amina Iddi also made the nominees’ list for her compelling feature Kitalu cha Nyota Kilichotelekezwa.

Announcing the nominees, the Media Council of Kenya said on X: “The wait is over, and the spotlight is set.

The Annual Media Excellence Awards nominees are finally here. These are the storytellers, truth-seekers, and game-changers redefining journalism.”

This year marks a historic shift as the awards transition from the Annual Journalism Excellence Awards (AJEA) to the Annual Media Excellence Awards (AMEA), reflecting the changing media landscape in Kenya.

“The credibility of these awards rests entirely on our collective commitment to professionalism and unwavering integrity,” said MCK Director for Media Training and Development Victor Bwire.

“We must move away from subjective opinions towards a transparent system that reinforces the Council’s role as both the regulator and the cheerleader for quality journalism.”

Winners of the 14th edition of the awards will be announced during the AMEA Gala Dinner on May 15, 2026.
