DCI arrests two suspected gang members in Kisumu crackdown

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has intensified its crackdown on organised criminal gangs in Kisumu following the arrest of two suspects in what detectives described as a carefully coordinated intelligence-led operation.

In a statement posted on its official X account on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, the DCI said detectives drawn from its headquarters, working jointly with officers based in Kisumu, carried out the operation as part of ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks operating in the lakeside city.

According to the agency, the first suspect, Gabriel Oyuga Nyaoke, also known as Omar, was intercepted at Guba Centre while allegedly heading towards Kisumu Town.

Officers reportedly recovered a small black bag in his possession containing a tear gas canister and twenty rolls of bhang.

“The first suspect, Gabriel Oyuga Nyaoke, aka Omar, was intercepted at Guba Centre while he was heading towards Kisumu Town,” the DCI said.

“Upon his arrest, he was found in possession of a small black bag containing a tear gas canister and twenty rolls of bhang, revealing his involvement in illicit activities.”

The second suspect, Collins Omondi, a resident of the Riat area, was arrested shortly after. A search conducted on his vehicle led to the recovery of several identification cards, a tear gas canister, a knife, holsters and five rounds of 7.62×39 mm special ammunition.

“Another suspect, Collins Omondi, a resident of Riat area, was taken into custody after a swift search of his vehicle uncovered several identification cards, a tear gas canister, a knife, holsters, and five rounds of 7.62×39 mm special ammunition,” the agency stated.

Both suspects are currently in police custody and are undergoing processing ahead of their arraignment in court.

The DCI said the arrests demonstrate its resolve to stamp out organised crime through intelligence-driven operations.

“This operation underscores the DCI’s commitment to dismantling criminal gangs in Kisumu and other parts of the country,” the statement read, adding that it sends “a clear message that those engaging in criminal activities will be held accountable.”
