Injured KCSE candidate appeals for chance to complete exams in hospital

A Form Four student at Ngaikini Secondary School in Kibwezi Sub-County, Makueni County, who is expected to sit her Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations this year, is appealing to the government to allow her to complete her exams despite missing papers following a road accident.

Seventeen-year-old Abigael Mbithe is currently admitted to Makindu Sub-County Hospital with serious injuries after falling from a bicycle. She managed to sit her first examination papers on Monday while receiving treatment in hospital but has been unable to sit for subsequent papers from Tuesday.

Her mother, Mirriam Muteti, who is also hospitalised after sustaining injuries in another accident, says arrangements had initially been made to administer the examinations to her daughter in the hospital ward. However, the arrangements were not extended to Tuesday.

Muteti says when she sought clarification from examination officials, she was advised to take her daughter back to school or transfer her to Makueni County Referral Hospital, where such examination arrangements could be facilitated.

Currently confined to her hospital bed with a swollen leg, Abigael says she had worked hard towards her KCSE examinations and fears that missing the remaining papers could jeopardise her academic future. She says her dream is to become a nurse, appealing for an opportunity to complete her examinations despite her unfortunate circumstances.

When contacted over the matter, Kibwezi Sub-County Director of Education, Beatrice Sironga, said appropriate steps had been taken to address the situation.
