DCI detectives seize large cannabis haul in Lang’ata, hunt for suspect intensifies

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations Anti-Narcotics Unit have seized a significant consignment of cannabis sativa during a raid in Lang’ata, Nairobi, in what authorities describe as a major breakthrough in the fight against drug trafficking.

According to a statement shared by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations on its X account on May 8, 2026, the operation was launched after intelligence reports linked a group of individuals to narcotics distribution in the area.

“Acting swiftly, detectives raided Maasai Estate along Kitengela Road in Nairobi County,” the agency said.

Investigators revealed that upon arriving at the residence, officers were initially met by a male suspect who appeared cooperative.

However, in a dramatic turn of events, the suspect allegedly pretended to search for keys before escaping through a back window, narrowly evading arrest. A female suspect later opened the gate, allowing detectives access to the property.

A comprehensive search uncovered seven sacks packed with cannabis sativa hidden inside servant quarters. Officers also recovered two weighing scales and a roll of yellow cellotape, items believed to have been used in packaging and distribution.

“From the main house, detectives recovered two carton boxes brimming with Rizla rolling papers, a mobile phone, and assorted documents, all pointing to a sophisticated operation,” the DCI stated.

Authorities say the seizure highlights the scale and organization of illicit drug networks operating within residential neighborhoods in Nairobi.

The recovered narcotics and related exhibits have since been moved to the DCI Headquarters exhibits store for safe custody as investigations continue.

Meanwhile, detectives have intensified efforts to track down the fugitive suspect who escaped during the raid.

The latest bust underscores the government’s renewed crackdown on narcotics trafficking, with security agencies warning that those involved in the illegal trade will face the full force of the law.
