One killed in deadly Nyakach cattle raid; police recover stolen livestock

A deadly cattle raid has rocked the normally quiet village of Jimo in Nyakach North, Kisumu County, after armed rustlers launched a brutal attack that left one man dead and several livestock stolen.

The victim, identified as Mourice Otieno Pete, was ambushed by assailants believed to have crossed over from neighboring Soin Sigowet area in Kericho County.

He was shot with a bow and arrow before being hacked to death with a machete in the early hours of the raid. His body now lies at Bethlehem Mortuary pending a postmortem examination.

Confirming the attack, Orina Dawin, the Assistant Deputy Commissioner of Upper Nyakach, said the suspects are known criminals from Soin Sigowet.
“These criminals came from Soin Sigowet, and we urge residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security forces to bring them to justice,” said Dawin.

In the wake of the assault, security forces mounted a swift operation, managing to recover three of the four stolen cows hidden in the dense bushes of Kamaitha and Kamagon. However, one cow and four goats remain missing.

“We have already recovered three cows. Now, we are actively searching for the last one along with four stolen goats,” said one of the police officers involved in the search.

The brazen nature of the attack has reignited fears in the region, which has a history of inter-county cattle raids. Community leaders are calling for enhanced security measures and are urging locals to report suspicious activities.

The brutal killing has left villagers shaken, with many expressing concerns over their safety and the recurring threat of livestock theft.

Investigations are ongoing, and security personnel remain on the ground in pursuit of the suspects. Meanwhile, tension continues to simmer as residents demand justice for Mourice Otieno and better protection from future attacks.
