Kenya sevens registered their first win of the season defeating Dubai 7s defending champions, South Africa 22-17 in an excting encounter as the 2024/2025 World rugby sevens series kicked off in Dubai on Saturday 30th November 2024 at the Sevens Stadium.
The win saw Shujaa recover from a 24-19 narrow loss to World champions France in their opening match played on Saturday morning.
Kabras RFC’s star Kevin Wekesa came in with the first try for Kenya against South Africa but Nygel Amaitsa’s conversion went wide making matters 05-00 in favour of Shujaa.
Kenya extended their lead moments later when speedstar Patrick Odongo scored two successive tries where Nygel Amaitsa managed to convert the first try but missed on the second bringing the scores to 17-00 in favour of Kenya at halftime.
South Africa came back strong in the second half where Tristan Leyds proved dangerous as he capitalised on Shujaa’s mistakes to score South Africa’s first try before Donavan Don adding another try reducing the gap to 17-12.
Tristan Leyds then earned himself a brace with a second uncoverted try following a defensive lapse on Shujaa’s side bringing the scores level at 17-17.
In the dying minutes of the game Strathmore Leos star Nygel Amaitsa scored the much-needed try for Kenya making it 22-17 in favour of Shujaa at full-time handing Kenya first win in Dubai.
The Kelvin Wambua charges are now placed second in Group A with four points, two points behind France who are top of the log with six points after bagging two victories.
South Africa are third with four points while Australia find themselves at the bottom of the log with one point having lost their two matches.
Shujaa’s will lock horns with Australia at 7.22 pm in the last match of the day.
