EPRA raises petrol and diesel prices, kerosene remains unchanged

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has announced new maximum retail petroleum prices effective 15th April to 14th May 2026, with Super Petrol and Diesel seeing significant increases while Kerosene prices remain unchanged.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, EPRA stated that Super Petrol prices will rise by Ksh 28.69 per litre while Diesel goes up by Ksh 40.30 per litre.

“The maximum allowed petroleum pump prices for Super Petrol and Diesel increases by KShs.28.69/ litre and KShs.40.30/ litre respectively while the price of Kerosene remains unchanged,” read part of the statement.

In Nairobi, Super Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene now retail at Kshs.206.97, Kshs.206.84 and Kshs.152.78 effective midnight for the next 30 days.

The adjustments come amid a sharp surge in global landed costs, with imported Super Petrol rising 41.53% from Ksh 75,383 ($582.11) to Ksh 106,691 ($ 823.87) per cubic metre between February and March 2026.

Diesel costs surged 68.72% from Ksh 82,400 ($636.45) to Ksh 138,979 ($1,073.20) per cubic metre, while Kerosene shot up 105.15% from Ksh 82,813 ($639.48) to Ksh 169,895 ($1,311.93) per cubic metre over the same period.

To cushion consumers from the full impact of the global price shock, the government has reduced the VAT rate on Super Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene from 16% to 13%, in line with Legal Notice No.69 dated 14th April 2026.

EPRA further noted that the government will cushion consumers through the Petroleum Development Levy (PDL) Fund by utilizing approximately Ksh 6.2 billion to stabilize the pump prices.

The authority also clarified that Super Petrol delivered by One Petroleum ex MT Paloma has not been factored into the computation of the applicable prices, as per the earlier directive from Government.

The new prices take effect from Wednesday 15th April 2026, with many citizens fearing that bus fare will rise due to the rise of fuel prices.
