FIFA World Cup debutants Cape Verde produced one of the tournament’s biggest surprises after holding football powerhouse Spain to a hard-fought 0-0 draw.
The tiny island nation, with a population of just over 500,000 people, delivered a disciplined and resilient performance to frustrate the former world champions and earn a memorable point on the global stage.
As expected, Spain dominated possession for large spells of the contest, but they struggled to break down a well-organised Cape Verde side that defended with determination and composure throughout the match.
Spain came closest to scoring in the first half when Ferran Torres rattled the crossbar after being picked out by Marc Cucurella. The rebound fell kindly to Mikel Oyarzabal, whose close-range header was brilliantly saved by veteran goalkeeper Vozinha.
The 40-year-old shot-stopper emerged as Cape Verde’s hero, producing a string of impressive saves to keep Spain at bay. He was at his best just before halftime when he made a superb sprawling stop to deny Aymeric Laporte’s powerful header.
Despite spending much of the game on the defensive, CapeVerde occasionally ventured forward and managed to relieve pressure with a few attacking moves of their own.
Spain continued to search for a breakthrough after the restart, with Fabian Ruiz firing over from distance early in the second half. However, the expected Spanish siege never fully materialised as Cabo Verde maintained their defensive discipline.
In a bid to inject fresh energy into the attack, Spain coach Luis de la Fuente introduced teenage sensation Lamine Yamal in the 71st minute. The youngster immediately added pace and creativity to Spain’s forward play, but Cape Verde’s defence remained resolute.
Oyarzabal had one final opportunity late in the match but failed to hit the target as Cape Verde completed a famous defensive display.
The result marks a historic moment for the Blue Sharks, who secured a point against one of world football’s traditional giants in their maiden World Cup appearance. For Spain, it was a frustrating evening, while Cape Verde celebrated a draw that will be remembered as one of the greatest achievements in the nation’s football history.
