FKF appeals CECAFA’s decision to hand Kenya a standard 3-0 forfeit win over Sudan, which erased a dominant 16-0 victory

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has launched an official appeal following a controversial ruling by the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) that wiped out the Junior Starlets’ historic 16-0 victory over Sudan in the opening match of the 2026 CECAFA U-17 Women’s Championship.

The Group A fixture, played on Saturday at the KMC Stadium, was brought to an abrupt halt in the 54th minute.

Following a relentless offensive onslaught by Kenya, a series of quick-fire injuries left Sudan with only six fit players on the pitch.

Because Sudan had already exhausted all of their technical substitutions, the referee was forced to abandon the match in accordance with FIFA laws, which dictate a game cannot continue with fewer than seven players per side.

However, instead of letting the 16-0 scoreline stand, CECAFA, after consulting with CAF’s Competitions Department, awarded Kenya a standard 3-0 walkover win.

The governing body cited tournament regulations stipulating that full match results cannot be recorded if 90 minutes are not completed.

The administrative rewrite deals a massive blow to Kenya. Star striker Brenda Achieng had her spectacular six-goal performance completely erased from the official tournament records.

More critically, the ruling slashes Kenya’s goal difference from +16 to +3. This penalty effectively hands the top spot in Group A to hosts Tanzania, who comfortably beat Somalia 4-0 on Day 1.

Refusing to accept the setback, the FKF has filed a formal challenge seeking an immediate review.

The Kenyan federation argues that punishing a team for an opponent’s inability to field a legal lineup is inherently unfair and compromises the sporting integrity of the final group standings.
