Former African Games champion Clement Kemboi found dead in Iten

The 2015 African Games 3,000m steeplechase champion, Clement Kemboi, is dead.

Elgeyo Marakwet County Police Commander Peter Mulinge says Kemboi’s body was found hanging on a rope tied on a tree at St Patrick High School farm in Iten.

The police boss says that he was informed of the incident by Koisunguru area chief on Monday, October 7.

According to police, the body of the 33-year-old athlete had decomposed, while his right leg had been eaten by dogs.

The body has been removed to Iten County Referral Hospital morgue awaiting autopsy.

Mulinge says that it is not yet known why Kemboi took his own life, even as investigations start in earnest.

Kemboi gained fame when he bagged gold in the 2015 Africa Games 3,000m steeplechase race in Congo Brazzaville.

This comes after news of 2016 World Athletics Under-20 800m champion Kipyegon Bett’s death.

Bett died on Sunday, October 6 at Tenwek Hospital in Bomet County.
