The former Harambee Stars midfielder, popularly known as the “90-minute man,” died aged 74 at his Bungoma County home on May 9 after a long battle with prostate cancer since his diagnosis in 2021.
Following the private cremation ceremony, a memorial service was held at Mama Grace Onyango Hall in Kisumu attended by family, friends, football legends and leaders including Eliud Owalo and Kisumu Deputy Governor Mathew Owili.
Several football legends were present to pay their last respects, among them JJ Masiga, Nahashon “Lule” Oluoch, John “Bobby” Ogola, David “Kamoga” Ochieng, Elly “Langalanga” Adero, Pete “Omuga” Dawo, James Goro Oronge, Olando Lolwe, David Okelo and Peter Odera.
Speaking during the memorial service, former AFC Leopards player JJ Masiga described Thigo as a mentor, friend and inspiration to generations of footballers.
“Allan Thigo was more than just a player on the pitch, he was an inspiration to generations who grew up loving the beautiful game. His dedication, resilience and passion for the game will remain in our hearts. On the field Allan was always moving forward, never taking a step back. Off the field he was a gentleman par excellence. Allan was a true champion on and off the field,” he said.
Gor Mahia patron Eliud Owalo termed Thigo a great football icon and urged former players and stakeholders to establish an annual tournament in his honour to preserve his legacy for future generations.
Thigo enjoyed a decorated football career with Gor Mahia between 1970 and 1982, helping the club win the unbeaten 1976 league title and reach the 1979 African Cup Winners’ Cup final. He also earned 81 caps for Kenya, scoring 11 goals for the national team.
