A former student of the Rift Valley Technical Training Institute (RVTTI) in Eldoret left the court stunned as she recounted in chilling detail how her ex-boyfriend doused the left side of her neck with sulphuric acid.
This was after she ended their relationship, before he (the culprit) calmly walked back to college to sit his final exam.
Bevaline Jelimo Sum, who was pursuing a diploma in electrical engineering, told Eldoret Presiding Magistrate Keyne Odhiambo that the attack took place on July 28, 2025, in the SOS area of Kapsoya estate, Uasin Gishu County.
She said the accused, Tonny Kimwetich Kangogo, had been issuing threats and intimidating her ever since she ended the relationship over issues she chose not to disclose in court.
Jelimo told the court that the attack was so swift she did not even see it coming, and only regained consciousness after a Good Samaritan rushed her to a private hospital.
The acid had burned the left side of her neck and left her fighting for her life.
What shocked the court further was that after carrying out the attack, Kangogo fled the scene and headed straight to college to sit his final paper in electrical engineering.
Jelimo also told the court that Kangogo later sent Ksh 11,000 to her elder sister’s mobile number to help cover her hospital bill, but she reversed the money on her parents’ instructions.
Her parents ultimately spent more than Ksh 1 million on her treatment for the grievous injuries she sustained.
Kangogo has denied the charge of causing grievous harm and was released on a bond of Ksh 50,000 or a cash bail of Ksh 20,000 during plea-taking.
The prosecution has lined up four witnesses, including the doctor from Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital who treated Sum and the investigating officer.
The case has been adjourned to July 28, 2026.
